Much nearer to home, Cortes de la Frontera is a standard Andalucian white village, with narrow streets, a smattering of bars and restaurants and plenty of local color. During an early evening drink with tapas, we watched teenagers doing wheelies on motorbikes; a bullfight on television in a bar; and a wedding procession — which ended in a party that, according modern Spanish tradition, was held in a half-finished section of a construction site. Alternatively, you can eat with the Hunts: three-course dinners (prawn salad with home-grown olives, monkfish and roasted vegetables, pear and almond tart) cooked by Henrietta in her yurt kitchen and served with wine and candlelight under the stars. The word “hotel” is not perhaps, entirely appropriate, but the Abubilla experience is packed with nature’s little luxuries: the pink glow of mountain scenery at dusk, the high-altitude fresh air (which even in August, cools at night to a comfortable duvet temperature) and the sound of tinkling goat-bells. And although the primitive toilet takes a bit of getting used to, I can’t recall a loo with a better view. Getting there: Where to stay: Abubilla Yurt Hotel (yurthotel. com), at Cortes de la Frontera, is open until the end of October (and from March next year).

Having your weekly grocery shopping delivered to your home is one of the little things that can make Saturday a bit more civilised. No more traipsing around a superstore, just a relaxing wait until there is a knock at the door and all the things you have ordered online are ready to unpack. At least, that is how it should be, although it is not necessarily always the case. Sometimes the order is late (or even early in the case of one online order I placed recently), or the substitutions that have been made for out-of-stocks are simply unsuitable. In the few times I have used a home-delivery service, substitutions have become a particular bugbear of mine.

What’s probably not free speech, however, is a garden – if your neighbors can’t see around it. Trisha Davies has grown a lush green wonder around her Hyde Park home, one that has netted her more than $75,000 in city fines over the last few years. Officials say her green thumb has resulted in blocked drivers’ views and pedestrians prevented from passing. Davies’ garden is something to behold, a wild tangle of blossoms and greenery. But city code doesn’t care whether it strikes you as terribly beautiful or just terrible. Judge James Dominguez is expected to rule in the case Sept.

Sheehan`s son Casey was killed in combat in Iraq and she`s camped out in Crawford, Texas, demanding to meet with President Bush. I spoke today with White House communications director Nicolle Devenish, and I asked her whether the president is concerned that Cindy Sheehan`s cause has grown into a national movement. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) NICOLLE DEVENISH, WHITE HOUSE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR: Well, look. The president certainly understands Miss Sheehan`s pain and he grieves with many families who have lost loved ones in the war on terror and in Iraq. And I think we heard from the president himself last week that when you look at what Miss Sheehan and some of her other antiwar demonstrators are proposing, it is exactly the wrong way to keep us safe here at home.
