“I think that people realise what the job of the Senate is – it is the house of review,” he said on Channel 7. “I am there to represent my state and if I do that properly and in a good fashion then I’m doing a good job for our nation. Asked about the reported clash with Senator Heffernan, Senator Joyce said: “Bill’s got a job to do and he’s got a certain viewpoint. Some of the things Bill says I don’t agree with and that’s the nature of politics,” he said. “I’m there to represent the people of Queensland and the vast majority of the time that aligns with the Liberal Party. “Ninety-five per cent of the time we agree.

Welsh chief takes swipe at England’s disarray

Added to a stunning Grand Slam by the national side, it seemed that Welsh rugby was sitting pretty; a paragon of organisation and resource management in comparison with an English game ready to implode over its umpteenth club versus country row. It seemed easy to contrast Wales, with its four regions full of mainly home grown players and an air of co-operation with the national side, with England, and its 12 Premiership teams, full of foreigners and playing a game being exposed as narrow and limited as Wales’ regions belatedly adopted the style and panache which produced that national clean sweep. Surely it was time to gloat? Not for Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive, David Moffett. It was little more than a week ago that he surprised everyone with his resignation for personal reasons, but he can depart at the end of the year safe in the knowledge that he leaves Welsh rugby in a much healthier state than when he joined in December 2002. It was less of a surprise that he expressd caution about the Anglo-Welsh situation on Friday when he said: “Let’s just see how this weekend’s results go. ” That evening Cardiff Blues were handed a lesson by England’s champion club, Wasps, losing 40-19.

, were among the best bargains for renters. Desirable coastal markets have been out of reach for many for decades, acknowledged Barbara Lipman, research director for the Center for Housing Policy. But scarcity of land, soaring demand and zoning policies that discourage dense development are putting pressure on workers whose wages have largely stagnated or grown slowly. “There used to be this notion that you could drive until you qualify,” Lipman said in an interview. “But that’s getting harder to do. You can’t drive far enough. What’s more, Lipman said, the phenomenon is spreading to interior cities such as Boulder, Colo…
Using a different set of federal data in 2003, the group found $176,718 was required to buy the median-priced home, which cost $567,000. An elementary school teacher in San Francisco makes about $53,478 a year, researchers found, up from $51,100 in 2003. Home buyers in San Jose would need $185,521 to buy a median-priced $545,000 home, up from $148,044 for a $475,000 home in 2003. Clearly, though, many who make far less than the salaries citied in the study are buying properties. That’s because researchers assumed a 10 percent down payment, a 5. 95 percent 30-year, fixed-rate loan, and that borrowers would not devote more than 28 percent of their income toward the mortgage, property taxes and insurance. The study does not take into account the fact that many buyers are rolling over the equity from another property.

That’s the basketball court at the Mohegan Sun Arena, where the tribally owned Connecticut Sun is the undisputed leader of the Woman’s National Basketball Association. At the end of July, the team had an 18 — 6 record, the best in the league. Even more remarkably, the Sun had won 16 straight games on its home court on the Mohegan reservation (counting a six-game winning streak in last season’s playoffs). Fan support has steadily grown. Attendance at some games has increased up to 35 percent above the previous year, contributing to a healthy growth in traffic at the surrounding Mohegan Sun Casino. Even though the winning streak ended July 30 with a home court loss to arch-rival Detroit Shock, more…
