An Australian drama usually costs $400,000-$500,000 an hour toproduce. The Americans spend 10 times as much. So, what are we watching instead? It’s not that we are desertinghome-grown TV. Sixteen of last week’s top 20 shows in Melbournewere Australian-made. It’s just that we’re not watching home-grown scripted drama. Inits place, we are watching other types of shows, especiallyfly-on-the-wall reality dramas. As a community, we are alsowatching more than ever before the day-to-day real-life dramaoffered by news and current affairs programs…

Maybe it is the spontaneity of Big Brother and TheAmazing Race that we are craving and the opportunity to watchTV as a window on the real world. One was that the July 21 blasts were copycat attacks, a frightening notion in its own right. Another was that Issac’s handlers had taught him how to throw investigators off the trail. A third possibility, which appears to be the most nefarious and likely, is that the July 21 and the July 7 bombing teams operated with no knowledge of the other, controlled by a mastermind who may have other home-grown cells of Britons ready to launch similar attacks. Sleepycat’s Berkeley DB is a best-in-class, open source database that competes on the basis of features and performance. Customers choose Berkeley DB because of technical fit for the type of application they are building, and because it’s faster than alternatives, no matter whether they are open source, proprietary or home-grown. Acquisition cost is not the primary driver. But the fact that we reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the customer’s application is sometimes a factor. Why is it sometimes better for the customer of open source software to purchase a proprietary software license for the same software? Some companies such as Sleepycat, MySQL and a few others are highly successful selling the same software under two different licenses, a no-cost open source license like the GPL and a paid commercial license. This gives customers a choice with benefits from both models.
