US shuts Lagos post for security
CNN – Jun 17, 2005
Nigeria’s population of 140 million people are divided roughly evenly between Muslims and Christians and the country has a long history of religious bloodshed. However, diplomats and analysts say there has been no evidence of bin Laden’s al Qaeda group in the country. One small home-grown Islamic sect known as the "Talibans" staged a series of attacks on government offices and police stations in the remote northeast at the end of 2003, calling for the imposition of an Islamic state, Reuters reported. CNN Africa correspondent Jeff Koinange contributed to this report.

As Iraq effort drags on, doubts mount at home
Christian Science Monitor – Jun 17, 2005
, Billy Vinson, an electrician and Navy veteran, says he supports President Bush and the war effort. Still, he laments the loss of American lives and says, “I wish the war was over. “I personally probably would have brought our people home by now,” he adds. Not everyone feels that way. Bratton DuBose, a financial adviser in Bozeman, Mont. , says he’s supported the war in Iraq all along, and he still does, even though the outcome is unclear. “Now that we’re there,” he says, “we have to see it through to the end…
Yet increasing numbers of Americans apparently disagree. Recent news out of Iraq, the Pew Research Center reported this week, “is significantly undermining support for the US military operation there. The evidence? The level of support for an “immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq,” according to Pew, has grown from 36 percent last October to 42 percent in February to 46 percent today. Segal and other experts cite several reasons for this. One is that what the White House dubbed “the global war on terrorism,” which began with the attacks of September 2001 and has become centered in Iraq, now has lasted longer than the period from Pearl Harbor to V-J Day, ending World War II in the Pacific. Meanwhile, the all-volunteer force, begun in the wake of political opposition to the Vietnam War, means that fewer and fewer Americans have any direct connection to the armed services.

International Comedy Festival launched
Jamaica Observer – Jun 17, 2005
Although the event has been rated “mature” for persons 18 years and older, Ellis International Producer, Denise Hunt, insisted that neither profanity nor the degradation of certain interest groups will be a part of the performances. This stance no doubt stems from the recent coalition of corporate sponsors such as Supreme Ventures and Red Stripe, following the Jamaica Carnival uproar. “The comedy festival is great exposure for local, home-grown talent” said Sonia Davidson, Marketing Manager for Cash Pot. Davidson lauded the second year of the partnership between Ellis International and Cash Pot and highlighted Supreme Ventures’ intention to expand its presence in the entertainment industry. Island Village also supported the event as part of its effort to put the theatre district of the North Coast on the map. Talk Back No comments have been posted.
