MTV Pimps Xbox 360
Wired News – May 13, 2005
When a game clip looked particularly good, a closer look revealed that it was pre-rendered footage and not actual gameplay, like the Madden 2006 movie clip that was shown. There was more fluff: the hosts of MTV’s car-makeover show Pimp My Ride took the original Xbox into their body shop and gave it a full bling job. (Does this mean that now that Microsoft is retiring the first Xbox console, it finally officially supports the home-grown “modding” community?) With a show full of segments like this (and another long commercial break that followed, which bizarrely featured a spot for Kotex), one wonders exactly what Microsoft was thinking when they entered into the marketing deal that produced this special. MTV probably introduced more Xbox fans to its product than vice versa last night. Finally, the hosts headed to Microsoft headquarters for some words with the console’s designers. Some system prototypes were shown off, and Microsoft exec J Allard gave viewers some of the first hard info (if you can call it that) about the Xbox 360 — you can buy and snap on new faceplates for your box, giving it your own personal color scheme and look. Allard also spoke about the new iteration of Xbox Live, Microsoft’s online gaming service, and how it will extend to Xbox 2.

minor league, the NBA-run National Basketball Developmental League, is low-rent: The maximum salary is $24,000, plus housing and benefits. Few teams have managed these shifts as well as Maccabi Tel Aviv. For years, Maccabi — like many European clubs — signed a few cast-off Americans to supplement home-grown lineups. In the mid- ’90s, a Maccabi coup was signing Tom Chambers (a former All-Star with the Phoenix Suns and Seattle Supersonics) at 36, as his NBA career was winding down. Young GunsContrast that with this year’s Maccabi roster: All the starters are under 30 years old, and several have impressive credentials. Sarunas Jasikevicius, the fiery Lithuanian point guard, led his national team to the 2003 European Championship. American shooting guard Anthony Parker was a first-round draft pick of the New Jersey Nets in 1997.

“The residents of Lake Region Mobile Home Village displayed true resiliency after last year’s hurricanes,” Bush said. “They are a shining example of how a community can come together in the aftermath of a disaster to accomplish great things. Nearly 240 year-round residents hunkered down in the clubhouse during Hurricane Charley last August, recalls Carolyn Olsen, president of Lake Region Mobile Homes Owners, Inc. Residents were without water and sewer for six weeks and continue making repairs to this day, she said.
