Senate bill is calling for a home-grown fair board
San Diego Union Tribune – May 7, 2005
If SB 1041 becomes law, the 22nd District Agricultural Association, which operates the fairgrounds, and California's other 53 agricultural associations will have five years in which to work out procedures to appoint the directors. The state Department of Food and Agriculture would continue to have oversight over all the fair boards, however, and the fairgrounds would continue to be owned by the state.
We need to woo Tories too

Gordon Brown was clearly Labour’s major (perhaps only) electoral asset. But his prize could be to inherit the prime ministership with his party on the defensive politically and with the 10-year economic boom petering out. There are serious risks in the global economy and we have a home-grown problem in the form of unsustainable personal debt linked to a slowing property market. There will, in turn, be knock-on effects on the budget deficit which may well deteriorate further and faster than the current consensus forecasts. A responsible opposition, in this context, will have to operate against the assumption of strict financial discipline. The Lib Dems’ commitment to making tough choices in spending priorities helped build our credibility and will have to be maintained and strengthened. Further major advances for the Lib Dems cannot happen in a narrow, overcrowded segment of the political market to the left of Labour.
Fark it! Let’s try to be real Aussies

I want swearing drunk primeministers who wear ridiculous puffer jackets and cry on the telly;not abstemious variations of Gee Dubya-lite. I want women toopreoccupied with big ideas to care whether their frock label saysOsti or Versace. I want a pop culture that is home-grown andexhilarating; not a weary Xerox of something only Americans knowhow to do well. A Gold Logie winner must be able to swear, belch and generallyenact ill-planned crassness with impunity. If not, I’m moving toNew Zealand.
Victoria becomes can-do state

“While I see there are better swimmers coming through, I don’tthink that they are in enough numbers and strong enough to make upfor when those people who are at the top drop out and they can stepinto (the gap), but the movement is there,” Talbot said. However, recent national age titles have shown that Victoria hasa number of talented youngsters coming through the ranks. Two ofthe home-grown talents who have come to the fore this year arebackstroker Andrew Lauterstein and middle-distance swimmer HayleeReddaway, who won the 800 metres freestyle national title and madethe world titles team. Lauterstein said the presence of elite swimmers such as Klim,Hawke and Rooney had lifted the confidence of all Victorianswimmers and they were no longer intimidated by the northernpowers. “You’ve got the older swimmers like Michael, Giaan, Brett Hawkewho have been in that team for a long time who have moved toMelbourne and made Victoria their home state,” Lauterstein said. “And that’s given the younger guys confidence because you arefriends with those guys when you are walking around the pool. It’sall been about being confident and knowing they are here to supportyou as well.
Abramovich hails Chelsea’s achievement

Much has been said about the financial outlay over the past two years. However, this must be seen in the context of placing Chelsea on a level playing field with the other top clubs in England and Europe for a sustained period. ” We have made solid investments on the field in players, management, training facilities and an academy that will nurture the next generation of home-grown talent. Off the field, a team of executives and senior managers has been put together to grow the business and capitalise on the playing success. ” All of this is a deliberate, long-term strategy with the aim of building the most successful football club in the world in the next 10 years and beyond. Under chairman Bruce Buck, chief executive Peter Kenyon and Jose Mourinho, we have a strong leadership team that shares my vision. ” Abramovich has hardly made any public comments since buying Chelsea from Ken Bates just under two years ago.
