Unable to talk and breathe on her own, she has been in the ICU since August 4, 2003 – almost a record stay for the unit. ICU nurse Lorraine Walker, who choked back tears as she said goodbye to her longest-staying patient, said most patients were there for only a few weeks at most, so staff were rarely able to form bonds. “She’s become one of the family here and we’ve all grown to really love her and we’ll miss her very much,” she said. Mrs Pierce cannot talk and is forced to communicate by blinking or mouthing words. When she finally arrived home she reflected on what had kept her going over the past 20 months. “Coming home, the boys and (husband) Jason,” she said. Surrounded by family and friends, she could not get the smile off her face…

(Business News) –> COPYRIGHT 2005 United Press International LONDON, April 11 (UPI) — Britain’s Soil Association claims that nation’s markets are shunning home-grown organic beef and pork in favor of cheaper imports. The survey, conducted when Britain’s meat was plentiful in November, found only a fifth of organic pork in Morrisons and Asda stores came from British.
