A pleasant evening of intimate performances
Jamaica Observer – Mar 24, 2005
A pleasant evening of intimate performances – JAMAICAOBSERVER. These artistes came out to celebrate Pinkney’s 60th birthday and his 40th musical anniversary and to perform in aid of the Walker’s Place of Safety and the Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes and Affiliates (JAVAA)…
A rare appearance from musician and singer Benjy Myaz was well received, but his duet with Sabrina Williams, even more so. Other musicians who momentarily took charge of the stage were riddim duo Sly and Robbie and saxophonist Dean Fraser. The backing band was an interesting splice and dice of musicians including Keith Francis and Sheldon McDonald of Pinkney’s DP Band, bassist Glen Browne, keyboardist Robbie Lynn, members of the Fabulous Five, including Sidney Thorpe (keyboards), Glenroy Samuels (rhythm guitar) and Donovan Palmer on drums, while the horn section was comprised of Romeo Gray (trombone) and Hopeton Williams (trumpet), and also members of Fab Five. The grand finale saw all the musicians and male singers joining the throng of females on stage to end with a rendition of Bob Marley’s One Love. Though the evening lacked the usual visual furbelows as is customary for events of its kind, it was a refreshing change to view these artistes in this intimate setting and witness them being musically coupled in the way that they were.

It is a slightly specious argument becauseJoe would have bought a computer anyway, although he would havegrumped about missing the mini by a week. More ominously, Ciarelli is accused of inciting theft of tradesecrets by urging informants to use his anonymous email andvoicemail systems. Then Apple’s lawyers demanded the email records of ThinkSecretand two other blogs, AppleInsider and O’Grady’s PowerPage, all ofwhich had published leaks about Asteroid, a secret Appletechnology. Santa Clara County Superior Court judge James Kleinbergruled in Apple’s favour, and things really hit the fan. Journalists and free-speech advocates were outraged. Americanssaw it as an attack on the First Amendment and the rights ofjournalists to report and protect their sources. But neither theFirst Amendment nor any other law, certainly not in Australia, allows a journalist to shield a source who has broken the law…
But don’tfeel ignored. China wasn’t in it either. However, a home-grown solution is coming from FramedPhotographics, a Gold Coast photo-finishing company. Greg Hulands, scion of the family firm, says he hopes soon to offer online albumsusing iPhoto album templates. It will use Shoebox’s iPhoto plug-inwith which you can send images for printing on high-qualityphotographic paper. Prices start at 40 cents for a 6×4.

Hockey: Michael Brennan, an integral member of Australia’s Olympic gold medal-winning team last year, yesterday announced his retirement. Ice Hockey New Great Britain coach, Rick Strachen, has named an inexperienced squad for next month’s World Championships. For the first time since GB re-entered international play in 1989, only one dual-national player is included, the Bracknell Bees forward Mike Ellis, with the rest of the squad made up of home grown players. If there is a wide chasm between the developed world and ours it is partly because we are not striving to be on the same page with the developed world and to a large extent with the rising economies in South-east Asia. Malaysia for instance has developed a programme where they have grown (and continue to grow) entrepreneurs within the ranks of the civil service to partner captains of private business to run state-owned industries. Instead of an out right sale of the state-owned company to foreign companies as pertains in Ghana and other countries, the government taps home grown entrepreneurs particularly the highly resourced ones in the civil service to partner the foreign companies to run these industries. The results from this programme have been phenomenal to say the least. From a near convulsive state, the Malaysian economy has grown in leaps and bounds and is still growing in spite of the catastrophic economic meltdown that hit Southeast Asia in the late 1990s. Other benefits under Malaysias divestiture programme include the transfer of knowledge which has resulted in greater understanding of the international business environment, sourcing for loans, investments etc. In the spirit of south-south cooperation we could borrow a page from the example of the Malaysians.
