Britain’s anti-terror bill: Controversial proposal faces tough…

Nothing fitted the profile of a terrorist and his case epitomizes what most disturbs the security forces about the increase in “home-grown” Muslim extremist terrorists. The Muslim community in Gloucester remembers him as a “walking angel”, a softly spoken, respectful man who left grammar school with four A-levels. Blair also attempted to lend justification for the push for new anti-terror powers by telling BBC that there were “several hundred” terrorists actively plotting within the country. Blair said the police and intelligence services were saying: “You have got to give us powers in between mere surveillance of these people – there are several hundred of them in this country who we believe are engaged in plotting or trying to commit terrorist acts – and being able, being sure enough of the proof, to prosecute them beyond reasonable doubt. Clarke decided not to mention that claim in his arguments until challenged by the former Tory cabinet minister, Peter Lilley, reports The Guardian.

It would not be difficult therefore to overlook the “special effects” triumphalism of diligent PR activists and the resulting almost hysterical acclamation with which the Adelaide Ring has been received by capacity audiences and concentrate instead solely on the serious shortcomings of the mighty enterprise, but to do this would be to err unhelpfully by denying Adelaide the honour and acclaim that are her due. To have undertaken the unusually demanding task of staging the Ring is by itself a feat of intelligent imagination that deserves appreciation, but so spectacularly to bring it to commercial fruition justifies the applause of lovers of opera and the arts in this country. More, this is, as far as I know, the first home-grown Ring in the southern hemisphere, and it behooves those responsible to ensure that it does also open the prospect of re-enactments that will encourage the emergence of more acceptable productions.
