Analyst Colin McGranahan, who follows both Lowe’s and Home Depot for Bernstein & Co. in New York, remained impressed with Lowe’s, saying the company has grown at a faster pace in recent years than much-larger Home Depot. “They have grown their square footage at a materially higher rate, which has been in the mid-teens compared with high single digits for Home Depot,” he said. “And their comps (sales at stores open at least a year) have been consistently higher” for the past four years, McGranahan added. “They are a smaller business and a faster growth business,” he said of Lowe’s. “Both of these companies are doing a great job, but Home Depot has been in transition over the last couple of years while they are reinvesting and revitalizing their stores. In a conference call with industry analysts, Lowe’s chairman and chief executive Robert Niblock pointed to growth in same-store sales as an indication the company is headed in the right direction.
