Ferguson: System does not help trawl for home-grown talent
Ireland Online - Feb 21, 2005
It cost them a lot of money to implement and it has cost the clubs a lot of money as well. I would ask âIs it working? Where are all the young boys coming through? Where has it gone?âââThe academy status is not really good enough for Manchester United in the sense that we donât really reap anything from it. âIn Fergusonâs eyes, the regulations which supposedly aid the development and production of home-grown English youngsters is doing exactly the opposite â with boys from other parts of the world being signed up instead. âItâs already starting to decline to the extent that it is worrying. The only thing we can do is look worldwide. Thatâs why we have built up alliances with other clubs around the world and brought in young players from all over the world â China, Ghana, Togo, America, Brazil. âThe system as it is at the moment doesnât really give us any choice but to do that.

A bunch of home-grown applications created using diverse platforms such as COBOL, Ingres and FoxPro had created islands of information that were scattered willy-nilly across different departments. The solution was to be a pioneer in implementing an inventory-specific Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) product called Apparel and Footwear Solution (AFS). Isolated islandsEarlier, the company’s business processes were handled by the aforementioned home-grown applications. The natural fallout of this was that islands of information attached to these legacy applications such as the warehouse application written in COBOL made it impossible to get any kind of meaningful information in real time. There were factory applications too (fabric inwards, quality inspection, goods receipt note, etc) that were used for everything from capturing production data to tracking finished products; these were written in FoxPro.

Craig saw the integration with their Epicorââs Avante ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) business system as a critical component. âIt is unlikely we would have moved forward without a complete integration,â? according to Craig. Each time Follett Ice expanded their home grown system, the company was forced to add small tweaks that make each one unique. The ERP system being used did not communicate with the ERP system in the way that Datacraft Solutions does. These calculations leave out the people time investment.
