Gaffney was keen to stress that Munster have been ‘extremely good’ employers and it seems the province are keen to retain his services. That said, Gaffney’s ultimate employer is the IRFU and it remains to be seen what they think. One of the union’s stated aims is to have home-grown coaches in all of the provinces. Michael Bradley, currently in charge at Connacht, is widely tipped to take over in Munster at some stage. Gaffney is fully in favour of the home-grown policy, incidentally. ‘I’ve always said that, ever since I came here as assistant coach at Leinster,’ he says. ‘I believe Irish coaches should be coaching Irish provinces and the national team…

Gaffney is fully in favour of the home-grown policy, incidentally. ‘I’ve always said that, ever since I came here as assistant coach at Leinster,’ he says. ‘I believe Irish coaches should be coaching Irish provinces and the national team. When I first got here with Matt, there was only one home-grown coach in the system and that was Declan Kidney; now I’m the exception. ’ Former New Zealand coach John Mitchell is the highest-profile candidate on Perth’s shortlist, which also features Rod Kafer, John Muggleton, Michael Cheika, Andy Friend and John Mulvihill.

The glitzy Baftas represent the highlight of the awards season in Britain, attracting the Hollywood and home-grown stars alike, but for Oscar campaigners they are just one step on an trail that includes the Golden Globes and various awards from US critics. It all culminates on 27 February in Los Angeles. The Baftas carry weight because industry insiders believe that if a film can gain momentum with a slew of early awards, it will be unstoppable by Oscar night. When Titanic swept the board at the Academy Awards in 1998, it was no surprise because it had won nearly everything else. Unlike the Oscars, the Baftas traditionally favour British movies but they are increasingly important, especially since they have rescheduled the big night to take place before the Academy Awards.

Jacqueline Wilson is a home-grown, 21st-century Blume. The author of, among others, The Story of Tracy Beaker and Dustbin Baby is, it was announced last week, the most borrowed author from libraries for the second consecutive year, beating lending-library grande dame Catherine Cookson (she’s at number four). Wilson specialises in tricky subjects: the aforementioned Tracy Beaker lives in a children’s home; the Dustbin Baby is exactly that — dumped when only a few hours old, fostered many times after that, and fed up. Vicky Angel is about Jade, whose best friend Vicky is killed in an accident but who continues to haunt Jade by bossing her about from beyond the grave. Secrets is about India, who is posh, and Treasure, who isn’t.
