A home-grown plan
San Diego Union Tribune – Dec 26, 2004
The native succulent used in traditional dishes tastes good and is healthy. Some people even believe it regulates diabetes. For decades families in Ayoquezco have grown nopal and hauled sacks of it to the city of Oaxaca, 40 miles north, to sell at the big market. With the modest earnings, mothers buy laundry soap, tortillas and school supplies. Dozens of Mexican families from this small Zapotec town in Oaxaca's Central Valley are now counting on the prickly plant not only for food and grocery money but to pull them out of poverty. About 150 families are on their way to becoming nopal entrepreneurs. Immigrant Oaxacans – many from Ayoquezco – who now live mostly in North San Diego County are helping them build a company in Mexico to process the cactus and distribute it fresh and, in Southern California, in jars…
The agency will also invest the remaining two-thirds needed to open the factory. "Why?" Ramírez asked rhetorically. The Mexican government wants to keep people home, he said. "This would be the first (successful) time immigrants could help Mexican communities by investing in productive programs that create jobs. We think this is the key in stopping people's decision to emigrate. "Universities and other nonprofit groups in Mexico are working with the government on similar plans involving immigrant groups as far away as New York and Chicago, Ramírez said. But Oaxaca's strong connections to California make Ayoquezco's project the most promising so far, he said.

Clubs give thanks to Brady bunch

Hoyte is from Islington, but Owusu Abeyie was born in Amsterdam, Lupoli is Italian and Senderos is Swiss. They have all been lured to Arsenal before signing professional forms in their home countries after turning 16. Critics say that Arsenal are turning their backs on “home-grown” talent whom many argue they chew up and spit out in their mid-teens as soon as European employment law and Premiership rules allow them to lure foreign youngsters. Away from Highbury’s marble halls, though, an entire team who have flown the nest are currently carving very respectable careers: Stuart Taylor, Moritz Volz, Rhys Weston, John Halls, Julian Gray, Rohan Ricketts, David Bentley, Steve Sidwell, Jerome Thomas, Tommy Black, Jay Bothroyd. If money is not flowing down from the haves to the have-nots at least some pedigree talent is. “I think Steve Coppell inherited Sidwell and James Harper from Alan Pardew at Reading, but Steve is one of the managers who keeps a close eye on what is going on at Highbury,” said Brady. “He already has two very good midfield players from us and they are now pushing for the Premiership.

Bubbles for all
St. Petersburg Times – Dec 26, 2004
Oz bubbly follows the same good-value trail, blended to a friendly g’day-mate palate, under such disarmingly candid labels as “sparkling chardonnay” or, the Aussie favorite, surprisingly rich “sparkling shiraz. ” Top names to look for are Seaview, Taltarni and Greg Norman. HOME-GROWN BUBBLES: American sparklers got little respect until big French Champagnes houses started buying California vineyards more than 20 years ago. Even if they haven’t been great financial successes, the new generation of U. sparklers set a higher level of quality and found the right cool climates in the counties of Sonoma, Mendocino and San Luis Obispo to make high-grade bubbly. Many sparkling specialists now also make still wines, too, but the top names and those with the most sparkling experience remain the same.
