The facts and figures are startling enough. On my flight from London I read that despite India being a net exporter of grain and economically self-sustaining, almost half its population is illiterate and one third of the world’s poor live here. Although it is a nuclear power and has its own home-grown supersonic jet fighters, there is no primary health care, sanitation or clean drinking water. Despite the great advances since independence from Britain in 1947, India’s leaders have failed to solve the one crushing problem that is evident even to the first-time visitor – the size of the population and its seemingly unstoppable growth. India is growing at the rate of 17 million people a year and will soon take over from China as the world’s most populated country. But as I was to discover, these bald, and well-known statistics, appear quite meaningless in the marvellous rough-and-tumble mad-house that is modern India. I had started out in Delhi, the stiff and formal administrative capital where troops of monkeys gambol at intersections crossed by the latest BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes driven by India’s wealthy new masters.
